National Solidarity Support Rally for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford

The St. Cloud State Women's Center organized a solidarity support rally for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, and all other sexual assault survivors, as the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearing continued. The Women's Center set up the event as part of the National Solidarity Day organized by the leaders of the Women's March on Washington. The center urged students to come out and show their support for Ford as she was testifying before the judiciary council.

A number of people were invited by the Women's Center to share a message with those attending the rally, leaders such as, Peggy LaDue, the Director of the Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center, and the Students for Choice organizations president, Carlee Staples. Jane Olsen, the Director of the Women's Center closed the rally, she spoke about the coalition building that has been making place nationwide. The rally was for channeling outrage into action, speaking out on how the country is treating women who come forward with the truth.

SCSU Homecoming Football Game 2018

St. Cloud State University holds their first homecoming football game since 2011, after the banning of homecoming due to budget issues. The Homecoming Kickoff established the mood and seemed to set the tone for all of October. Before the game Saturday October 20, 2018, was the tailgating party that was placed in the parking lot near the football field, looking like no other.  “It just feels like there is so much positive energy out here. I can’t wait to see where this goes during the game,” said senior student, Patrick Liedl during the tailgating party. They hosted music, drinks, and food, and many students and families were there to celebrate the first Homecoming game in years. The crowd of the game was the biggest seen all season, filled with students, graduates and family, a total of almost 3,600 people filling seats. The optimistic atmosphere of the crowd seemed to send energy to the field as the Huskies took the lead over Upper Iowa University early in the game. While the football game was a major establishing event for St. Cloud State University, there were many more homecoming events, and besides that plenty more to come throughout the month of October.

De-Stressing with Kittens at St. Cloud State University

St. Cloud State University held an event, De-Stressing with Kittens. The end of the semester can be stressful, dealing with exams, projects, and missing home. Students were invited to come to the Atwood Gallery any time from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, to play and pet the kittens. St. Cloud State University has a partnership with the Tri-County Humane Society and the Central MN Therapy Animal Association, and together they presented the event. At the event there were 3 kittens in the gallery and 12 students would come into the room at once and have a period of time to socialize with the cats and play with them. The volunteers from the humane society were telling students about the deal they are having at the time: two for one kittens, and telling them to tell their friends and family. The Tri-County Humane Society has many different volunteer programs that students can take part in. Animal care providers, animal photographers, offsite adoption event workers, and service learning programs, are all options for someone looking to volunteer. For students that either don’t like cats or prefer dogs the humane society is putting on another event December 6, for people that would rather “De-Stress with Dogs.”
